In 1989, GSM responsibility was transferred to the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI), and phase I of the GSM specifications were published in 1990. Commercial service was started in mid1991, and by 1993 there were 36 GSM networks in 22 countries, with 25 additional countries having already selected or considering GSM In addition to Europe, South Africa, Australia, and many Middle and Far East countries have chosen to adopt GSM. By the beginning of 1994, there were 1.3 million subscribers worldwide. The acronym GSM now (aptly) stands for Global System for Mobile telecommunications.

From the beginning, the planners of GSM wanted ISDN compatibility in services offered and control signaling used. The radio link imposed some limitations, however, since the standard ISDN bit rate of 64 Kbps could not be practically achieved.

The digital nature of GSM allows data, both synchronous and asynchronous data, to be transported as a bearer service to or from an ISDN terminal. The data rates supported by GSM are 300 bps, 600 bps, 1200 bps, 2400 bps, and 9600 bps.

The most basic teleservice supported by GSM is telephony. A unique feature of GSM compared to older analog systems is the Short Message Service (SMS). Supplementary services are provided on top of teleservices or bearer services, and include features such as international roaming, caller identification, call forwarding, call waiting, multiparty conversations, and barring of outgoing (international) calls, among others.

CDMA

Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) is a digital air interface standard, claiming eight to fifteen times the capacity of traditional analog cellular systems. It employs a commercial adaptation of a military spread-spectrum technology. Based on spread spectrum theory, it gives essentially the same services and qualities as wireline service. The primary difference is that access to the local exchange carrier (LEC) is provided via a wireless phone.

Though CDMA’s application in cellular telephony is relatively new, it is not a new technology. CDMA has been used in many military applications, such as:

    * Anti-jamming (because of the spread signal, it is difficult to jam or interfere with a CDMA signal).
* Ranging (measuring the distance of the transmission to know when it will be received).
* Secure communications (the spread spectrum signal is very hard to detect).

CDMA is a spread spectrum technology, which means that it spreads the information contained in a particular signal of interest over a much greater bandwidth than the original signal. With CDMA, unique digital codes, rather than separate RF frequencies or channels, are used to differentiate subscribers. The codes are shared by both the mobile station (cellular phone) and the base station, and are called pseudo-random code sequences. Since each user is separated by a unique code, all users can share the same frequency band (range of radio spectrum). This gives many unique advantages to the CDMA technique over other RF techniques in cellular communication.

CDMA is a digital multiple access technique and this cellular aspect of the protocol is specified by the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) as IS-95. In CDMA, the BSSAP is divided into the DTAP and BSMAP (which corresponds to BSSMAP in GSM).

The de customer base of Nokia in over hundred countries will be able to use Google search in days to come with location based navigation services.

Hailing the models launched as mini personal computers Nokia’s Chief Executive Officer Olli Pekka Kallasvuo said, “As we continue to free the internet from the limitations of the desktop, we are taking mobility into a completely new realm of possibility.”

The sets are endowed with personal navigation software that can guide pedestrians with detailed digital maps with movie viewing to video and photo sharing devices.

Nokia Executive Vice President Kai Ostamo, while commenting on its new range of phones, said “We would like to be called Mobile Experience Company and not just a mobile phone company.”

Nokia seems to be high on spirit with this added service and is vying to add more customers. The mobile company through a research by British institute Canalys found that 60% of its users would appreciate GPS enabled function on their mobile phones.

Global Positioning System (GPS) was the most popular development to be discussed at Mobile World Congress, one of the largest exhibitions consisting of over 1200 exhibitors.

GPS-enabled phones will be priced at about 450 euros (Rs 26,000) with additional charges of subscription of the GPS services.

The world first pedestrian phone Nokia 6210 comes with a receiver for GPS network of 24 satellites and integrated compass which will provide accurate information anywhere in the world with local map software.

The Nokia officials with much praises for the navigation services said that this device would help people to explore and discover even the unknown places with much confidence.

Don’t let that rather dated exterior fool you, because the newly announced Nokia 3120 Classic cell phone comes equipped with all the latest technology that you’ve come to expect from the Finnish phone-maker.

It’s a pretty standard-looking candybar with a large color display, five way navigator, and a rounded bottom (the bottom is similar to the 8800, except this is obviously not a slider).

A look at the features, however, will quickly unearth some totally acceptable and respectable specs. In addition to the quad-band GSM/EDGE radios, the Nokia 3120 Classic also gets North America-friendly WCDMA 3G radios (850/1900) for a high-speed connection on the go. Alternate configurations bring up 3G radios for Europe and Australia/South America. The other wireless connection comes by way of Bluetooth 2.0.

The compact Nokia 3120 makes use of the Series 40 platform and boasts features like a 2 megapixel camera, a secondary VGA camera for video calls, FM radio, MP3 player, microSD expansion, 2.5mm headset jack, Opera Mini browser, and your choice of three color schemes. Look for it in Q2 for about $222.

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) today announced the appointment of Ian Macnamara of Nokia to the position of Chairman of the Board. As chairman, Macnamara will lead the group of seven board members who provide guidance to the Bluetooth SIG on the creation and promotion of Bluetooth wireless technology.

“For years, Ian and Nokia have been deeply involved in the development of Bluetooth technology. The Bluetooth SIG is especially pleased to have Ian in this position as we move to incorporate Wibree technology, first created by Nokia, as Bluetooth technology’s ultra low power solution,” said Michael Foley, Ph.D., executive director of the Bluetooth SIG.

Macnamara is Technology Manager for Nokia’s Complementary Wireless platforms group. Using his Electronic Engineering, background, he spent many years working in Europe and Asia on RF designs for industrial and consumer products before moving into management where he has 20 years experience. During his 14 year tenure with Nokia, he has worked on design, manufacturing, specification and standardization of telecommunication products. Macnamara is currently responsible for technology assessment and selection as well as strategy and implementation plans for PAN, and GPS within Nokia.

“This is an exciting time to be a part of the evolution of Bluetooth technology. The SIG and its thousands of member companies are constantly improving the technology, expanding into new markets and working to unite wireless technologies to meet every consumer need,” said Macnamara. “It’s an honor to be elected by the board to help guide the next year and plan for the next decade of Bluetooth technology.”

Bluetooth technology turned 10 years old in 2008 and has nearly two billion devices with the technology in the marketplace. Macnamara expects that number to continue to grow with new advances like ultra low power and high speed Bluetooth technology.

“Ultra low power Bluetooth technology opens up new markets for the popular global standard, like sports and fitness, a wider arena within healthcare and monitoring and sensor applications. At the other end of the spectrum, high speed Bluetooth technology will provide consumers with the ability to quickly and easily transfer huge amounts of data, like video and complete music libraries, wirelessly,” added Macnamara.
