Nokia cell phone application: Nokia 5700

Nokia 5700As one of the newest member of the XpressMusic series, the 5700 is sure to be a hit among audiophiles. At first glance, the phone surely has the design of the 5200 and 5300. Although the two phones are sliders, the 5700 is a bar-type twister - a feature found in the old 3250. Yes, the lower half occupied by the numeric keypad can be twisted 90 degrees counterclockwise and 180 degrees clockwise.

Anyways, the demo unit that we have has a black and white color combination. The black portion of the phone has a matte finish while the white potion is glossy and plastic-like. The whole design of the 5700 would appeal to the young (either teens or young professionals) or the young-at-heart if they are after the music playing function. Personally, I liked the design of the keypad since it is easy to compose messages with it. Although I didn’t appreciate where the clear and the menu buttons are located. I’m not a fan of joysticks either, which is what was used in this phone for navigating through the phone’s menu.

With regards to the battery, it has a BP-5M 900 mAh Lithium Polymer battery that would probably last about three or four hours of continuous talk time. The battery cover is quite surprising because it just snaps on and there is no button to release it. You would have to use your nails to pop it open once you take out the plastic strap attached to it

What I find interesting about this phone is that the Pop-Port has been replaced with a mini USB connector. It is located at the left side of the phone along with the micro SD card slot and the charger port. What you will find at the bottom part of the phone is only a 2.5 mm AV connector. This is where you will connect the handsfree accessory which is where the 3.5mm stereo earphones will be connected.

Looking at the back of the phone is where the dedicated music keys are located (the rewind, pause/play, and skip buttons). The play button also act as the shutter button when you will use the camera function. Regarding this, the 5700 sports a built-in 2-Megapixel camera and a flash located at the lower left side of the phone.

Since the phone can be twisted, turn it counterclockwise and the camera function will be turned on. Zooming in and out can be done using the skip and rewind button, as well as the volume buttons located opposite of the InfraRed port (which is beside the mini USB port). Still images up to 1600x 1200 and videos of up to 320×240 resolutions respectively can be taken. Once the phone is twisted to camera mode or when making video calls, there would be difficulty using the joystick if there is a need to.

And because the 5700 has a card slot, memory space can be expanded upon the user’s preference aside from the 35 Mb internal user memory. The micro SD that came with the unit has a 512 MB capacity, which is good enough for a couple of music files. Connectivity-wise, users can choose whether via Bluetooth, InfraRed, and USB.

Like the 3250, the 5700 also is equipped with speakers (two actually) which are located on the upper left side and the lower left side. Although the speakers on the 5700 are of stereo quality and produces better audio output when I tried playing a few MP3 files. The Music Player is capable of playing MP3, AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, and WMA audio files. And at full volume, the audio output has little or no cracking sound during the course of my test.

Other features of the phone are fairly similar to what my E50 has. You still have the organizer sub-menu with the calendar, notepad, calculator and converter, and it also has a GPS data application and web browser. Half of this article was done on the 5700’s notepad so it basically helps if you want to take note of things, or dates on the calendar which can be set with an alarm to remind you.

Interesting features of the phone is the installed movie editor and FM radio. This truly makes the 5700 a multimedia gadget since it is capable of editing those videos that are taken with it. And the games to entertain you are the “Marbles,” which is similar to the PC game “Zuma,” and “City Bloxx” - a simple stocking game which is quite challenging.

Overall, the 5700 is fit not just for audiophiles but also to those who make use of their phone for its multimedia capabilities. The size of the phone might be quite bigger than the 5300 in terms of length and width but is is thinner at 17 millimeters. To those who love to make video calls, it is possible with the 5700 – all you have to do is align the camera to the LCD.
