Nokia says 100 mln phones with S60 software shipped
The world’s top cell phone maker Nokia (NOK1V.HE: Quote, Profile, Research said on Wednesday it and its license users have shipped more than 100 million smartphones using Nokia’s S60 software platform.
S60 is used extensively in Nokia’s line-up of more expensive models and in the smartphones of LG Electronics (006570.KS: Quote, Profile, Research and Samsung Electronics (005930.KS: Quote, Profile, Research.
Findings from research firm Canalys previously showed that the S60 software platform, built on the Symbian operating system, is used in 54 percent of smartphones shipped. Its main rivals are Microsoft’s (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research Windows Mobile and Linux.
As cell phone prices decline, handset vendors have started to look for new revenues from potentially lucrative software operations.
