OnStar, Cell Phone Lead ISP To Crash

A Vincennes man is recovering Monday morning, after a car accident left him disoriented and unable to tell sheriff’s deputies where he was.

Officials say around 1:30 Sunday morning, they received notification from OnStar, about a single-vehicle accident in Knox County. OnStar reported the exact location of the accident was unknown, but they were speaking with the driver, who was disoriented.

A search ensued and the victim’s daughter was able to call him on his cell phone. Using GPS coordinates from the driver’s cell phone, officials narrowed the search down to a five-mile radius.

After a three-hour multi-agency search, an Indiana State Police helicopter located 62-year-old Ronald Walter some distance from the road, in a field on Winkler Road.

Officials say Walter suffered injuries from the crash and hypothermia from the cold.
