Samsung SGH-P200 GSM/VOIP Hybrid Phone Sighted at FCC

Samsung has filed an FCC application for its upcoming SGH-P200 hybrid cellular VOIP phone. There is very little information available on the SGH-P200 at the moment. However, with the little tidbits of published information it looks like the SGH-P200 will be GSM compatible with 802.11b/g wireless LAN and UMTS capabilities.

Judging by the features and concept of the SGH-P200 it may be a smartphone running Windows Mobile 5.0 — Samsung’s smartphone OS of choice. Samsung hasn’t confirmed compatibility with any specific VOIP carrier yet, though this decision may be left up to the phone carrier — several of which are already announcing the SGH-P200.

VOIP has become quite popular and gaining support from plenty of manufacturers. Companies such as Intel, Linksys and Microsoft have jumped on the VOIP bandwagon with its own specific products. DailyTech has previously reported Intel’s Slick Mountain VoIP PCI card, Microsoft’s Windows Live Call service and Linksys’ WIP300-NA VoIP phone. With companies such as Skype offering free SkypeOut outgoing calls throughout the US and Canada and Vonage offering free calling to select European countries as part of its unlimited voice plan, VOIP is becoming a viable competitor to traditional phone companies offering greater value and competitive rates.
